Questions
I'm frequently asked about
my caricature service at events.
(If you have questions about caricatures drawn from
photos
for gifts, invitations, or business, click here!
Q:
I want to hire you to draw at my party. How do you charge?
A:
Please contact me for a price quote for your particular event. My fee will be based on a number of factors including the time and day of your event, travel distance, and nature of your event. Once I have this information I will give you a price for my appearance. (I do not charge individual guests. You, the host, pay me to appear and the caricatures are free to your
guests.)
Q:
How many people can you draw per hour?
A:
I'm fast! In three hours I can draw up to 40 people (in black and white). Each face takes approximately 5 minutes to draw. If you expect a huge crowd I can contract one of my talented associates to draw along with me, doubling the amount of people drawn in the same amount of time.
Q: Do you exaggerate people's worst features? I've seen some pretty mean caricatures!
A: No worries! My caricatures tend to flatter. See for yourself! The artists I work with are just as kind. You're hiring me
to make your guests feel great, so we aim to amuse, not insult. I hear comments like: "I didn't know I looked so good!" and "It's so cute!" My job is to capture personalities on paper
in a humorous, lighthearted way, and send people away
smiling or laughing.
How far in advance should I book you for my party?
A:
As soon as possible. I book functions anywhere between a day's
notice to a year away. My busiest months? December, May, June,
September, October.
Q:
I'm expecting hundreds of guests. How many artists
will I need? Are they as good as you?
A: You should have me hire as many artists as your budget allows.
I can assemble
up to 10 artists with enough notice. I contract Boston's BEST caricaturists to work with me. Artists that
represent me well in quality and style. They make great drawings, show up on time,
and have friendly, professional personalities.
Q:
Do you draw at kids parties?
A:
Sure. Please contact me with your details and I'll give you a price quote for my appearance.
Q:
How far will you travel?
A: I live and work in the Boston/New England area, but
I'm willing to travel internationally if my expenses are
covered. Travel time is factored into the price I quote you, with no hidden fees.
Q:
What do I need to provide for the artist(s) at the party?
A: A table (preferably rectangular
or square) and three chairs, next to an outlet, per artist. One
long table for multiple artists is fine. No outlet necessary
if the party is outside or in a well-lit area. Q:
Once I decide to book you for my event, do I send a deposit?
Do you send a contract?
A:
Yes and yes. After we discuss the details of your event, I
send you an agreement (usually via email), which you sign and mail back to me with the
specified deposit.
Q:
What size paper is used? What kind of materials?
A: Caricatures are drawn on 8 1/2"x
11" white card stock paper. I draw with permanent black brush pens.
For color work I use markers, but sometimes pastels or pencils.
Q:
Do you provide frames or mattes?
A: Not
at this time. Plastic
bags are given to protect the drawing.
Q:
How do you handle lines of people waiting to be drawn? Do
you use lists or numbers?
A:
First come first served is
the smoothest way of handling it. Lists
and numbers sound great in theory but trust me, they cause
lots of confusion for everyone! If, however, you provide a volunteer to manage
those methods, that would be acceptable.
Q:
Do you recommend Black & White drawings or Color at
parties?
A: I draw more in black
& white these days,
because
you can accommodate more people--less waiting and happier
guests. Color looks awesome, but black & white does too. I ask that you choose one or the other based on the numbers you expect, well before the event.
Q:
Can you be available for a "rain date"?
A:
Sorry, no, because I can't turn other work
opportunities away. I
can only book myself (or other artists) for weekend events that are held 'rain or
shine'.
Q:
Do you draw on anything other than paper? Like T-Shirts or
Boxer Shorts?
A:
Sorry, just paper. Occasionally
I'm asked if I can
draw lots of people on one big board.
This is fine with me.
Q: Do you ever roam around at the events,
drawing from table to table?
A:
I only roam if it's an unusual circumstance or special
request. I can only draw in black & white in this manner, and it's
harder to get good likenesses because people don't feel as
obligated to hold still. If an elderly or physically challenged person can't walk to my table to be drawn, I always go to them.
Q:
I'm planning a block-party/fair. I can't afford to
hire you myself, but there'll be tons of people
and I'm sure you'd do great business. What would you
charge per picture?
A:
Sorry, I don't do set-up-and-sell events! For me to appear at your event, I need to be booked in advance
and paid my fee!
Q: I'm planning a charity fundraiser. Can you
volunteer your service for us?
A:
As
much as I'd love to help out every charity that calls, my
caricature service is in demand on weekends so I can't afford
to commit to non-paying events. I'm happy to do charity events
if I find myself available at the last minute.
Q: I work at a company. We think it would be fun to have you draw our employees so we can hang the pictures around the office. Can you visit us during the work week?
A: Yes! Several companies hire me as an on-call caricaturist! Here's how it works: companies book me to appear on a certain work day when they know everyone will be there. They set me up in a conference room, and each employee takes a quick break to pose. The caricatures are later framed (by the company) and hung in the halls, and on office doors and cubicles, creating a fun and lighthearted workplace! Whenever new employees are hired, my phone rings!
