An Interview With The Artist!

How long have you been drawing?
Since I was three years old. I've always loved drawing people the most, even back then.

Did you go to art school?
Yes, I went to the University of Hartford Art School. I majored in Illustration.

Do you do anything other than caricature?
Yes. I also do "serious" illustration work, in a realistic style, for my own picture books. My caricature style and illustration style are totally opposite. But I love doing both and I feel happy and balanced as a result!

I hear your first picture book is out?
Yes! It's called Cape Cod Invasion!. It was published by Commonwealth Editions in May of 2007. You can order it here!

Do you have a blog?
Yes! I recently started a
blog about caricatures. You can check it out here! I update it regularly. It shows photos of people holding my drawings at my most recent events, and gives a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what it's like being me.

What do you love most about drawing caricatures?
Connecting with people, making them smile because of something I've drawn for them. I'm a pretty social person by nature, so caricaturing at events is the perfect antidote to the solitary hours I spend working at home. Thanks to caricature, I get out and meet all kinds of people and work in amazing places. I feel very lucky to have this ability!

What are your favorite types of parties to draw at?
I have a soft spot in my heart for big family events. Sometimes I'll draw four generations of one family in the span of three hours! They send me away not only with a check, but with kisses, hugs, and a plate of food!

Do you teach drawing lessons?
Yes, to private students who live near Framingham, MA. I've taught drawing and cartooning courses to students of all ages at places like Rhode Island School of Design, Mass Bay, Dean College, and after-school programs. I love teaching people how to draw!

Are you available for school visits to discuss your artwork and draw for the kids?
Yes! Just contact me!

Finally, can you reveal one secret about how you capture somebody's likeness in a caricature?
I'll give you two: When someone smiles, if their eyes crinkle into little black lines, you don't draw eyeballs--you just draw the lines. And second, always make the ladies look nice! :)
